Argala: The Bolt on a House

I've been reading Jyotish lately and came across a technique called argala.

Argala literally means door-bolt — the wooden bar you drop across a door to hold it shut. Placed inside a chart, it asks something very concrete: in this area of life, who is pushing, and who is blocking?

The rule itself isn't hard. Counting from the house you want to read, planets in the 2nd, 4th, and 11th are lending force; planets in the 12th, 3rd, and 10th are obstructing. What's hard is that it has to be judged layered together with everything else — the nature of the planets, the significations of the houses, derived houses, planetary strength, aspects.

An example.

Say a chart has Cancer on the 10th, with the Moon sitting there. If the birth falls near a full moon, that Moon will be very full indeed.

The 10th is career; the Moon rules emotion, relationships, the public. Stack the two and this person is highly serviceable in a career — smooth on every side, at ease in business or in any line of work that runs on dealing with people. There's even a chance of becoming a public figure.

But the 9th is Gemini, and Rahu sits there.

Counted from the 10th, the 9th house is the 12th. The 12th means dissipation, expenditure, energy drawn away. So planets in the 9th obstruct the 10th.

Rahu is exalted in Gemini, blessed by Vishnu — already an auspicious graha in its own right. But an obstruction is still an obstruction. It only obstructs differently.

The 9th governs dharma, higher knowledge, lineage. An exalted Rahu inclines this person to follow the rules of the world, to move step by proper step. That disposition drags on the speed of the career sprint — or, put another way, it defers the success.

Because the 10th was strong to begin with, it still arrives in the end. Just slowly.

But what if the 10th weren't strong?

Add this layer of drag, and the person may well become an obscure guru — unknown, and deeply learned.

What's interesting is that if you turn around and look from the other end, the story flips.

Counted from the 9th, the 10th house is the 2nd. The 2nd means sustaining, providing, keeping something fed. So the 10th, read in reverse, is support for the 9th.

This person can carry their dharma outward, transmit higher knowledge. By what means? By the Moon's means — close to the values of society, and with a humane touch.

The same configuration. Read from career, the 9th is resistance; read from dharma, the 10th is support.

Resistance and support are never absolute. It only depends on which end you're standing at when you read.
