【As a Usui Reiki Master, I Want to Talk About "Online Audio-Based Attunement"】
Recently on Threads in Taiwan, after seeing discussions about Theta Healing, I noticed a wave of conversations about online Reiki courses. As someone who has walked the full path of traditional Reiki transmission, I'd like to share my perspective.
Let me be upfront — these are my personal views. I can't claim to hold the absolute truth. But I believe some things deserve to be talked about openly.
—
Intention is magic.
This isn't something I made up. Across every major lineage and tradition, they all point to the same thing — what truly drives the flow of energy is intention.
So if an online course involves a teacher conducting a real-time, one-on-one distance attunement with a student, I believe that can work. In that moment, the teacher's intention is focused, their energy is directed toward you, and a genuine energetic exchange is taking place between two people.
You could say it's an adaptation of traditional attunement for the modern world. My own teacher shared examples of this during our training, and at the very least — with intention present and real-time interaction happening — it's viable.
—
But audio-based attunement? That's where I have serious doubts.
If you remove the teacher's intention and energy from the equation, and all that's left is an audio track — those hertz, those frequencies — can that really open your Reiki channel?
The reason attunement is sacred is because, in that moment, the master uses the energy cultivated through years of practice to consciously open your channel. It is a transmission from one person to another — not a transaction between a play button and your eardrums.
Without the teacher's intention and energy, how long would you need to listen to an audio track to open your Reiki channel? Ten minutes? An hour? Or does someone claim it happens the moment you press play?
—
If audio alone were enough, let's follow that logic:
Tibetan Buddhist empowerment ceremonies? No need — just listen to an audio track. Lineage-based attunements across all traditions? No need — just listen to an audio track. No master required. Just a book and a sound file, and you could probably become the Super Saiyan of Reiki.
Sounds absurd, right? Yet that is exactly the kind of thinking that the logic of "audio-based attunement" leads to.
—
Here's what I'm really trying to say —
The way we learn Reiki can evolve with the times. Teaching theory online, guiding meditations, leading practice sessions — all of that is wonderful. I even respect the possibility of real-time, one-on-one distance attunement, as long as genuine intention is present.
But the essence of attunement has never been about a specific frequency or sound wave. It's about a person who carries a lineage, with the depth of their practice and the clarity of their intention, opening an energy channel for you in that very moment.
That weight is something audio cannot carry.
I hope everyone who feels called to walk the path of Reiki finds a teacher who truly transmits with heart — and receives an attunement experience that is complete and real.
Your body will remember the flow of that energy. 🙏
